Political Assessment
Being a PolSci stud, here's my take on what's happening to the Philippines.
The Current Political Situation: My Assessment
What do these things have in common: Ninoy’s assassination and the Marcos vs. Aquino snap elections, an envelope that wouldn’t be opened in the Estrada impeachment trial, GMA’s oath taking in EDSA. Correct, all these are indicators and the starting point of a People Power Revolution, the provoking events that led to EDSA 1, 2 and 3. Are we facing yet another People Power Revolution? Has there been that event that will trigger the start of another “pandemonium?”
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, with all the recent occurrences, received an abundance of political inoculations. The wounds these shots created damaged not only her image but also the country’s. I firmly believe that another people power would be a poison rather than a free lunch. Destabilization will definitely be present with this scenario and the country’s dying economy will face DEATH in a matter of seconds. We will forever hold the title of “the country that will oust their leader if they don’t like him/her.” Why is this happening? In my opinion, and I quote my professor, politics is just a game of the elite. You get rid of one, the other would take his place. It’s a cycle, a vicious one. Only those with power and wealth are able to play the game. But this is reality.
Let’s see it from another angle. Why don’t we get rid of all the politicians, both the administration and the opposition side? It’s a revamp of the whole Philippine political system, a make-over. It’s a completely brilliant plan (borrowed from the movie Legally Blonde). Wrongo. First of all, the politicians would never permit it and that is facing reality as we see it. These people spend tons of money (that may be able to pay-off our foreign debt) to be in a political position. They even kill to gain some political clout. It’s a game so new alliances will be formed, just like in Survivor. They might even reconcile and pretend that everything is okay then continue their old ways of bickering and politicking when the situation is back to normal and people have been fooled again. Politicians are good at this. Haven’t we seen enough people jumping ships when they are about to sink (Defensor-Santiago overboard, although I dearly love Miriam)? But this is reality.
A call for resignation, when not answered, will result to another people power. Why can’t we call for the resignation of all instead of just one? I’ll say, for my second point, it’s because people are ignorant. People are more aware politically, yes but they are ignorant. Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think (borrowed from the song Ironic). People are politically aware in the sense that information nowadays are quickly disseminated with the emergence of new technologies like text messaging, emails and other highly advanced stuffs. We are ignorant because of the fact that people easily believe (I think the right word is gullible). Not only that, people also chooses to disregard things even if it’s in front of their face. We choose to believe in politicians even if they know the nature of these power-hungry people. We choose to participate in their game of cats and mice. We choose to be ignorant. Furthermore, politicians, knowing this stuff will play with the people’s emotions. They would incorporate mass actions with their plans of overthrowing whoever is in power and take the position for themselves saying that it’s what people want. We do not want you there. We want change. We want advancement. We want a strong republic. We want a better Philippines. That’s what we dream of. But this is reality.
We have the power to stop all these. To initiate change. To make our dreams THE REALITY.
Wake up!
